Sight Reading 1: Single Notes

Here are some PRACTICE TIPS for using the Sight Reading 1 drill:

First of all, we strongly recommend that you set some goals that can be easily accomplished and evaluated. For example: Play 3 notes in the Treble Clef correctly within 5 seconds.

A general approach to a good practice strategy:

1. Start with a few notes within a generous time scale.

2. Once accomplished, decrease the time scale and/or increase the range of notes until you reach a point where you cannot accomplish accuracy.

3. Start with diatonic notes in a C Scale then introduce accidentals.

4. Just practice the sharp or flat notes in the Treble Clef.

5. Just practice the sharp or flat notes in the Bass Clef.

6. Create a range of chromatic notes (both sharps and flats) within a limited range (for example, a 5th).

7. Increase the range of chromatic notes to one octave, then beyond.

These are just a few of almost unlimited combinations of ranges, number of notes and time scales.

A good ultimate goal to accomplish: Play accurately for 30 seconds any range of notes with the number of notes set to 30 (1 note per second).
