Class Piano Resource Center:
Instructor Resources
You will need to have THREE ITEMS installed in your Class Piano
Lab computers in order for the Sequencer Controls software to
work properly:
QuickTime version 4.1.2
OMS version 2.3.8
Finale's music fonts
Download OMS 2.3.8 Installer
Download Quicktime 4.1.2 Installer
Download Music Fonts
[If the installers do not download when you click on them, hold down
the OPTION key and click again. The files which download are IMAGES.
When you double-click on one, it instalsl an "image" on your
desktop which acts like a little disk drive. Double-click on the IMAGE
to open it up and see the actual files which must be installed. Copy
them to your computer hard drive by dragging the files from the disk
image to your hard drive.]
In order to use the Sequencer Controls software which accompany
the Class Piano Resource Materials, you will have to
configure the Class Piano Lab computers to be compatible with the MIDI
driver used by the software. Here are the MINIMUM requirements:
You will have to have PowerMac computers with a processing speed
of at least 150 MHz. The computers need to have an operating
system installed version 8.0 to 9.2. An OSX version of the software
is not available yet.
QuickTime version 4.1.2 (or greater) and Opcode's, OMS
version 2.3.8 also need to be installed.
A word about Quicktime:
The MIDI driver in the software uses QuickTime's Musical Instrument
interface to play MIDI files. Earlier versions than QuickTime 4.1.2
may not be compatible.
A word about OMS:
OMS (Opcode's Open Midi System) is very stable and is recommended
for all Macintosh computers prior to OSX. [If you ARE running
OSX, then OMS is not needed so DON'T install it.]
Here is the sequence of installation:
1. Install the music fonts in the Font folder in your System
folder by simply dragging the fonts into the folder. You do not have
to re-start your computer.
2. Install QuickTime. The QuickTime installer application
will automatically RESTART your computer.
3. Install OMS. The OMS installer application will automatically
RESTART your computer.
4. Make sure you have your piano workstatiion hooked up to some
kind of MIDI interface. Many newer digital pianos have a MIDI
interface BUILT IN and all you have to do is connect the piano to
the MODEM port of your computer using a serial cable. Read your digital
piano instruction manual carefully in order to configure the internal
MIDI interface. If you have a regular MIDI interface box, make sure
it's connected to the MODEM port and not the printer port.
5. Create an OMS set up for your synthesizer/piano with both
MIDI IN and MIDI OUT (a tutorial on this will be forth coming). After
you create the setup, you should see the QuickTime Musical Instruments
DRIVER in the window of the OMS Setup. Double-click on it. Turn QuickTime
ON. Close all the OMS windows and quick OMS.
6. Open up the QuickTime Settings Control Panel. If you don't
see "MUSIC" in the top Pop-Up button, then select MUSIC.
Click the "Edit List" button. A new window appears and you
should see a top row of fields and buttons. In the "Synthesizer"
pop-up button, select "General Midi" (not, "Other synthesizer").
In the "Midi Port" pop-up button, select the instrument
you created in your OMS setup. At the bottom of the window in the
MIDI Input pop-up button, select the instrument you created
in your OMS setup. Close down all the QuickTime windows.
7. Now you're ready to test out the Sequencer Controls Software.
Launch the software by double-clicking on the application. If everything
is working properly, you should hear THREE quick notes play from you
synthesizer keyboard. A TROUBLE SHOOTING tutorial will be forthcoming.
